Tromsø Friluftsenter

The Past, the Present, and the Memories That Last – Northern Lights, Culture, and Hospitality in Tromsø.

About

Our story

It all started on the coast of Kvaløya, where our family has lived since 1880. For generations, we worked the land and the sea—farming, fishing, and living in rhythm with nature. At the heart of it all was my strong and powerful father, who carried the spirit of this place with pride. One night, standing under the dancing aurora, he felt something so moving that he decided to share it with the world. That moment planted the seed for Tromsø Friluftsenter.

What started as his dream has become a family journey—one that has now lasted for 20 years. With two decades of experience chasing the Northern Lights, we know the Arctic skies and landscapes by heart. But knowledge alone is not what makes our tours unforgettable. It is the warmth of Northern Norwegian hospitality, the humor, and the culture we share.

We want to give you more than just a tour—we want you to feel our history. That’s why we bring the past alive, telling stories of Sami, Kven, and Tromsø’s coastal life. In many ways, joining us is like stepping into a “blast from the past,” where tradition, stories, and laughter become part of the journey.

For us, chasing the Northern Lights is not a job. Every night is different, every guest brings new energy, and every journey reminds us why we do this. It’s not only about the aurora, but also about the silence of the Arctic night, the crackle of the fire, the taste of chocolate cake, and the friendships that are formed along the way. This is the soul of who we are. We don’t just want to show you the Northern Lights—we want to honour the legacy of our father, and of the people who came before us, the reason we stand on this land today.
