Tromso Friluftsenter does not run whale safari anymore, but our colleagues we have cooperated with during the past years are running a tour with a catamaran that offer the quality we recomend. The catamaran Aurora Explorer runs quickly, safely and directly from Tromsø city center to the whale area, sit back and enjoy the beautiful lyngen Alps and the rural coastal scenery on the way there.
From late October to end of January (approximately) some of the world’s biggest mammals visit the coast outside Tromsø to feed on herrings. The most common whale species we see are the humpback whale, killer whale (orca), harbor porpoise and sometimes even the fin whale. You are invited to come on board to take a close-up look at the feast, once we reach the whale feeding site, we stay for 1 – 1,5 hours.
The boat will provide you with a good opportunity to take photos and nice sightseeing. There is a kiosk on board to purchase hot expedition meals (dry food to which you add hot water), snacks and cold drinks.
Please note that whale sightings cannot be guaranteed. Sightings can be affected by weather conditions and/ or whale’s natural behavior, so it is impossible to be able to offer a guarantee.
The route, duration and destinations seen on the tour can differ from day to day based on the weather. However, if the whales are not spotted, you can still enjoy the fjord cruise.
Keep in mind that the weather in the arctic can be rough some days. If you think you might get seasick, please bring sea-sickness medicine with you and take it half an hour before the trip starts.
