Winter Activities

In the period from 25th of November—17th of January we have Polar Nights here in Tromsø.

This means we have no sun, only a bit of light during mid-day.

But, on 22nd of December, the sun turns again, and we look forward to sunnier days. In this period of time, Tromso is an exciting and special place to spend time in.

Tromso Friluftsenter offer a variety of activities:

Reindeer raid with Saami dinner
From 01 Jan- 31 March

09.00/19.15 – The  tourists will be picked up by the hotel and driven to Tromsø Friluftsenter. Driving thru the Norwegian landscape, you will also see the alps of Tromso, called Lyngs.

When we arrive in Risvika, your guide for the evening will provide you with warm clothing. When everyone is fully dressed we head for the Saami lavvo (traditional saami housing) and the tourists will be informed about the centre, and the activities we offer –as well as the necessary facilities.

We transport you up to where the reindeers are waiting for you with the sledges and you will go on a calm and amazing trip and experience the traditional saami way of transport several years ago.

While sledding through the Norwegian winter landscape the only thing you will hear is the reindeer belle. A seldom peaceful experience.

The sled ride takes about 25-30 minutes.

When we return to the lavvo, we serve coffee, and the saami traditional meal called Bidos (with vegetables and reindeer meat). The warmth from the bonfire and the warm soup will bring you back in time and give you a glimpse to feel and experience how the saami people lived their lives. Your guide for the evening will also tell you stories about the saami people’s history and way of living.

You will be shown how to throw lasso on antlers, and you will get the opportunity to try it yourself.

Extreme northern lights overnight-stay with
45 minutes reindeer sledging

We will pick you up at Rica ishavshotel 13.15 and drive you to our facility.

There you will be provided with good warm clothes and food, then we will have a briefing with you, to ensure that you will feel safe during your trip.

In a reindeer sledge we transport you up to a wooden cabin formed as a lavvo. There you can enjoy your evening and look for the northern lights in complete silence and darkness. You have a stove that will make the cabin nice and warm, and you can cook food there.

The next day you will be picked up by the sami and the reindeers and enjoy the 45 min sledge ride back to our main building.

Included in the price you will have a light evening meal, breakfast, clothes, communication device and reindeer sledging.

Northern light safari

19.15 – We do our pick up at Rica ishavshotel.

When we arrive in Risvika and Tromsø Friluftsenter your guide for the evening will welcome you to our Saami lavvo (traditional saami housing) You will be informed about the centre, and the activities we offer –as well as the necessary facilities.

You can go outside the lavvo and experience the northern lights that Mother Nature brings us. We have a coral beach with white sand you can go down too and watch the aurora borealis while you hear the ocean.

During the winter time, there is no sun in Tromso. But we have the Aurora Borealis – the northern light. Have you ever seen it? It is a magical experience; the sky fills with a green colour dancing over the dark sky. So you can be able to see the best of it, we shut off all the lights, and you are free to go around the centre and down to the coral beach, and enjoy this magical sight brought to us by Mother Nature.

When you are satisfied with the sight of the Aurora Borealis, come back into the lavvo and get the warmth back from the bonfire while you enjoy a hot cup of coffee and some cake.

If you like more fun and action, we have a slope where you can toboggan and play around in the snow.

The guide will inform you about the Sámi way of living, and tell you about the northern lights.

Rent of snowshoes without guide

09.00/19.15 – You will be picked up by the Rica hotel and driven to Tromsø Friluftsenter. Driving through the Norwegian landscape, you will also see the alps of Tromso, called Lyngs.

When we arrive in Risvika, you will be provided with your snow shoes and given an easy instruction in how to use them. We will also show you the best place to go to see the scenery and enjoy your stay. 

When you want a breake you can come down and join us in the lavvo and enjoy a warm cup of coffee. (If we have other guests)

Northern lights bus, including a lavvo visit

We pick you up at Rica ishavshotel 19.15 in either a 32 seats buss or a Volkswagen Caravelle - depending on how many participants we are expecting.

From Rica the trip takes us to where the northern lights are. The guide for the evening has researched before the trip and knows where the best place to be is.

Previous years we have had the best percent showing of the northern lights because of our location on the north of Kvaløya. The city lights will be behind us so we will have a dark sky in the north. The best way to see the lights!

If the weather isn’t good enough, we will drive towards better weather.

In this way you will have toilet facility- warmth from the bonfire in the lavvo and a drive to see the lights if they don’t show up at our place.
